School system to hold driver fair

Calvert County School Bus Driver Fair

Prince Frederick, MD - The responsibility of transporting a large number of children to and from school five days a week, 10 months a year requires a special person to step up and grab the wheel. Are you that special person? The opportunity to find out is being offered in late June by Calvert County Public Schools (CCPS).

Calvert County Public Schools’ Director of Transportation Ed Cassidy explained to TheBayNet.com that the system is in need of more bus drivers. For the second year in a row CCPS and the Calvert County School Bus Contractors Association (CCSBCA) are teaming up to present a “bus driver recruiting fair.” The event will be held June 27 from 1 to 7 p.m. at the Career and Technology Academy (CTA, formerly known as the “Calvert Career Center”) on Dorsey Road next to Calvert High School.
In providing an overview of daily school transportation in Calvert, Cassidy explained that the county’s school bus drivers work for local independent bus contractors.

“These contractors hire drivers to drive daily routes, to drive as substitutes and to drive trips to athletic and extracurricular events,” Cassidy stated. “The contractors who serve Calvert County Public Schools are seeking qualified candidates to be trained and certified as school bus drivers. This is a great opportunity to work close to home and serve the children, and schools in our community.”

Cassidy pointed out that the first step is earning a commercial driver’s license (CDL) learner’s permit. The Transportation Department’s driver instructor, Chuck Baker, will help applicants through the entire process.

The June 27 event will include round table topics and demonstrations. Bus driver hopefuls will learn how to conduct a pre-trip inspection and everything about the certification process. There will also be discussions of the mandatory processes such as fingerprinting and criminal background checks, random alcohol and controlled dangerous substance training and annual medical examinations.

For more information about the bus driver certification process, contact Baker at 443-550-8778.
