ACS Relay for Life event raises over $150,000

LEONARDTOWN, MD -- Every donation to the American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life in St. Mary's County counts, from the smallest food donation to the largest check.

Hosted at St. Mary’s County Fairgrounds on June 4, the event raised over $150,000 with the help of 59 teams and 445 participants. Event participants took strides around the track to raise funds, some wearing outfits that included purple tutus and rainbows of various cancer awareness ribbons.

“We raised $153,893 in total, with the help of teams such as Struttin’ for Sambo, AVAIN Celebrates Life, and Hollywood Elementary School,” said Tom Cavanagh, event lead.

Individuals like Susan Dudley, co-event lead Jenifer Kearns and Linda Ogaz also helped raised funds during the event. Organizations including St. Mary’s County Public Schools, St. Mary’s County Private School, and Partylite also contributed to the event, said Cavanagh.

“We appreciate all those who supported us. We had people donate money, of course, but we also had people donate food, audio equipment, and more,” said Cavanagh. “This event is about people coming together and supporting the cause of funding research to cure cancer, and help survivors and caretakers who are in need.”

The event featured a dinner hosted in honor of the participating survivors and caretakers, as well as remarks from Randy Guy, guest speaker and president of the Commissioners of St. Mary’s County.

Other activities at the Relay For Life event featured a Zumba! dance, a corn hole tournament and performances by the Chesapeake Children’s Choir and the Veda Mid-Eastern Dance troupe.

Event-goers could also participate in the Luminaria Ceremony and Slideshow, where they were asked to remain silent to honor those who have or are currently battling cancer. GrooveSpan Duo provided music during the Luminaria ceremony.

The Robbie Boothe Band treated event-goers to live music, and a Ms. Relay Pageant was also hosted.

Children could also participate during the event at the Kid’s Corner, where they could have fun with coloring, hula hoops, bubble wands and more.
