There was a modest turnout June 15 for an early-morning five kilometer (K) race at Lancaster Park in Lexington Park. The third annual Juneteenth Memorial Festival 5K Run/Walk is a prelude to the day’s better attended activities to celebrate and commemorate the emancipation of slavery in the United States. The race raises money to support the mission of the Unified Committee for African-American Contributions (UCAC).
The first participant to cross the finish line was Jeff Henkel, whose time was 17 minutes and 56 seconds. The top female finisher was Laurie Lancaster with a time of 23 minutes and four seconds. Jeff was one of several Henkels to excel on the mostly flat, USA Track and Field-certified course. Other family members also earned medals in their respective age categories.
Official results of the race had not been posted as this story was being filed.
