Box truck driver seriously injured after crash into tree

UPDATE 1:20 p.m. -

A 47-year-old man is critical condition after crashing into a tree, May 15, around 8:30 p.m., according to the Charles County Sheriff's Office.

The man was travelling North on Kentucky Avenue, La Plata in a 2006 GMC Box truck when for unknown reasons, he left the roadway and struck a tree. The man was transported to a nearby hospital by ground with critical injuries. No further information is available at this time. 

La Plata, Md- Shortly before 8:30 p.m., on May 15, a motor vehicle crash was reported in the 8500 block of Kentucky Avenue. It was reported that the driver was trapped and unconscious.

First arriving units advised a large box style truck had crashed into a tree. The driver was conscious and breathing upon their arrival, but heavy extrication was needed. A request for a medivac transport was made, but was denied due to the choppers being down for impending weather. 

At this time, Kentucky Avenue is closed between Charles Street(Route 6) and Autumn Place, while crews work to clear the scene and investigate the cause of the crash. Motorists should avoid the area until further notice.
