maryland-department-of-natural-resources-stewardsThe Maryland Department of Natural Resources is now recruiting 35 full-time individuals, between the ages of 17 to 25, for the Maryland Conservation Corps, an award-winning AmeriCorps program that engages young Marylanders in extensive conservation and natural resource management projects that enhance Marylandโ€™s public lands and waterways.

The program is seeking recruits to participate in the 11-month effort, beginning in September 2017 and ending in early August 2018. Apply today.

Maryland Conservation Corps crew members gain valuable hands-on training and experience as they help restore the Chesapeake Bay; protect forests by caring for and planting native trees; preserve wildlife habitats; maintain park trails, picnic areas, campsites and playgrounds; and partake in environmental education and interpretive programming.

โ€œThe Maryland Conservation Corps connects interested young adults with our stateโ€™s treasured natural resources,โ€ Secretary Mark Belton said. โ€œThrough service to our citizens and our environment, crew members become knowledgeable stewards while gaining valuable career, life and social skills.โ€

Managed by the Maryland Park Service, the Maryland Conservation Corps provides the opportunity for skill development and personal growth through a supportive, team-based environment, emphasizing the satisfaction of completing projects that benefit Marylandโ€™s natural resources. Under the supervision of staff, individuals work in crews of 5-7 members dispersed throughout the state.

โ€œOur park rangers and staff rely on crew members to bring projects to completion each and every year,โ€ Maryland Park Service Superintendent Nita Settina said. โ€œMarylanders selected to participate in this highly-competitive program take great satisfaction in knowing they are making a positive and tangible contribution to their communities and state.โ€

To be considered, individuals must submit an online application along with a writing sample, which will be reviewed by department staff. Placement will be conducted on a first-come, first-served basis.

The program receives funding from the Corporation for National and Community Service, Governorโ€™s Office on Service and Volunteerism and Maryland Department of Natural Resources.
