Huge success for 1st Annual Craft Beer Festival

Chesapeake Beach, MD - Hundreds gathered along the white sandy beaches of the Chesapeake Beach Resort and Spa on Saturday, April 29 for the 1st Annual Craft Beer Festival. It felt more like July than April on the hot spring day and it was the perfect weather for the first of many similar events to come.

Wesley Donovan, the president of Chesapeake Resort and Spa, said the turnout far exceed his expectations, “We have over 500 people here right now and we still have four hours to go.” Twenty six craft breweries lined the bay with at least two different types of beer. “Craft beer is popular right now and it just made a lot of sense to host this event.”

Planning for the festival took about six months. Many of the breweries in attendance were local but there were also nationally known brands. “There are a lot of breweries in the county and they loved the idea and many of the people at today’s event heard about it through those breweries,” Donovan explained.

“Craft brewers are so passionate about their products,” Megan Bennett, marketing director at the Chesapeake Resort and Spa, said. The festival also afforded the resort the opportunity to support the local economy. “We’re all about supporting the local community. The distributors were excited about the event and there is such a great group of people here who are interested in trying a wide variety of quality craft beers.”

Chesapeake Beach Resort and Spa partnered with The Arc of Southern Maryland from day one. Part of the proceeds from the weekend event benefitted both The Arc of Southern Maryland and The Arc of the Central Chesapeake. “We support children and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities,” explained Michelle Hackett, public relations specialist for The Arc of Southern Maryland. “We provide residential services, help with job placement, and provide skills to help them become active members of their community.” More than $1,000 was raised for The Arc this weekend.

If you missed this weekend’s event, Donovan said the resort is already planning another Craft Beer Festival for this fall and hopes to continue to host two a year. “It’s just a good time. Come down, try a few different types of beer that you might not have heard of, hang out and have a drink by the bay.”

If you haven’t visited Chesapeake Beach Resort and Spa, it’s a unique destination that offers something for everyone. “We really work hard to make it seem like a resort destination right here in Southern Maryland. Whether you like to gamble, or want to dine by the bay, pamper yourself in the spa, or get out on the water for some boating and fishing; it can be a romantic getaway or a family trip,” Bennett noted.
