UPDATE 1:30 P.M. - Official Police Report: On May 3 at approximately 7:42 a.m., Troopers from the Leonardtown Barrack responded to a personal injury accident, involving a St. Mary’s County school bus, on Point Lookout Road, south of Newtowne Neck Road in Leonardtown.  The investigation revealed that a 17 year-old student from Leonardtown High School was operating a Silver 2005 Toyota Corolla and attempting to merge into southbound traffic on Point Lookout Road from Newtowne Neck Road.

St. Mary’s County School bus #504 was traveling directly behind the Toyota Corolla.  The Toyota Corolla came to a stop in the merge lane as it was attempting to merge into southbound Point Lookout Road.  The driver of the school bus failed to control its speed and struck the rear of the Toyota Corolla.

There were no reported injuries from the driver or the 24 students aboard the school bus.  The 17 year-old driver of the Toyota Corolla was transported by ambulance to St. Mary’s County Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.  For additional information contact TFC Jordan Stern with the Maryland State Police Leonardtown Barrack at (301) 475-8955.

UPDATE: TBN has learned that now 4 students are seeking treatment for injuries in the SMH Emergency Room. It has also been confirmed that the driver of the Silver Toyota was a student heading to Leonardtown High School when rear-ended by the school bus.

At approximately 7:40 a.m. on May 3, St. Mary’s County School Bus Number 504 was involved in a fender bender near the intersection of Newtown Neck Road and MD Route 5. The driver and 25 school children were initially thought to be unharmed and a second bus was brought in to transport the children to school.

According to one parent who asked TheBAYNET.com to not use her name, "My daughter just called and her neck hurts so I am taking her to the ER to get checked out.  Another girl is also complaining of neck pain."

Students on the bus report that the bus was merging onto Route 5 from Newtowne Neck Road and rear-ended the silver Toyota. "My girls think the driver in the silver car may also have been a student, but not sure and they took her away in an ambulance," said that parent.

At the same time, not known if related, there was a second accident between a jeep and a van. Transportation and police authorities are investigating the cause of the accident.
