Traditional Good Friday march held in Solomons

Solomons, MD - The solemn occasion of Good Friday has been observed the past several years on Solomons Island with the Procession of the Cross. The march is held prior to noon, starting at St. Peter’s Episcopal Parish and ending at Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church.

The Good Friday Procession of the Cross is organized by SMILE Ecumenical Ministries. Founded in 1991, SMILE stands for “Service Makes Individual Lives Exciting.” Seven churches comprised SMILE when it was founded. Today there are 12 participating churches and the nonprofit 501c(3) organization has its headquarters on the campus of Middleham Chapel on HG Trueman Road in Lusby. The organization runs a thrift store and food pantry, staffed by volunteers, at its headquarters.

In addition to the Procession of the Cross, SMILE’s “ecumenical experiences” include a Baccalaureate service for Patuxent High School seniors, provides holiday baskets  at Easter and Thanksgiving; and a holiday dinner Christmas Day.
