Calvert teachers chosen for Fulbright abroad program

HUNTINGTOWN, Md. - Two teachers from Huntingtown High School have been awarded the prestigious honor of attending a Fulbright-Hays Group Projects Abroad program this summer. Social studies teachers Amy Cox and Peter Kerwin will be among twelve public school teachers to travel to China and Hong Kong this summer for a five-week immersion experience.

Dr. Daniel D. Curry, Superintendent, said, “The work these two teachers do this summer will enhance the world history curriculum for all students in Calvert County. We are very proud of their selection and look forward to hearing about what they learn.”

The program, coordinated by Towson University, intends to develop educators’ intercultural competence and enhance social studies curriculum and instruction on China and Hong Kong in the areas of history, culture, religion, economics, language, and educational systems.

Prior to the trip, Ms. Cox and Mr. Kerwin will participate in online modules that provide the teachers with initial language training, background knowledge, and cross-cultural understanding. Their time in China and Hong Kong will feature a combination of seminars, cultural workshops, and school and museum visits, as well as cultural excursions designed to help participants understand the diversity and complexity of the region. Upon their return, they will finalize and implement the units of study they created. The final products will be posted on a website for all educators to access.
