Maryland State Police investigating fatal pedestrian crash

Forestville Md. – Jan. 27,  A 79-year-old man died early this morning after he was struck by a bus while attempting to cross I-495 in Prince George’s County.

The victim, identified as James Albert Gibson, of Upper Marlboro, Md., was struck at about 12:30 a.m. on southbound I-495 north of MD Route 4. According to investigators, the DC Circulator bus struck Gibson, who was attempting to cross the southbound lanes from east to west. The bus driver immediately stopped the bus on the right shoulder of the road to check on the victim and then contacted police.

Troopers from the Forestville Barrack, along with troopers from the state police’s Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division and crash team and Prince George’s County police and EMS responded to the crash. Prince George’s County EMS declared Gibson deceased at the scene.

The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration closed three of the four lanes of I-495 for several hours after the crash. There were no passengers on the bus at the time of the crash.

The victim had been reported missing shortly before the crash by Prince George’s County Police. His body was taken to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore.

The incident remains under investigation.
