Gymnastics center mold detected; remediation underway

Lexington Park, MD - The St. Mary’s County Recreation and Parks Gymnastics Center is currently closed while repairs and cleaning are made to the center.

Arthur Shepherd, director of Recreation and Parks, told that on Thursday, Dec. 21, crews were in place to install a new, 42’ X 54’ competitive spring floor mat.

When the workers pulled up the old mat they notice potential mold.
Recreation and Parks closed the facility and called in ServPro, a mold remediation company, and DNR Environmental Solutions to test the area. Air tests detected high levels of a number one allergen; Aspergillus-Penicillium. This allergen contains no harmful micro-toxins but could cause problems for those with asthma or other breathing issues.

Recreation and Parks has been working with ServPro to remediate the area, including scrubbing and cleaning the floor. On Wednesday, Jan. 10, a new air sample will be collected. If the test shows no allergens in the air, crews will return on Friday, Jan. 12 to install the new floor.

If all goes as planned, the gymnastics center will be back open for business on Monday, Jan. 15.

Parents of all students received a letter about the issue.
