Callaway man sentenced in child abuse case

Leonardtown, MD-  A Callaway man agreed to a plea deal to avoid a trial in which he was charged with felony child abuse. David Michael Presley, 25, was indicted in September of 2017 on one count of child abuse in the second degree and one count of assault in the second-degree.

According to charging documents, Presley was accused of abusing his three-year-old son and trying to hide the evidence.

On Friday, Jan.5, Presley pleaded guilty to the charge of assault in the second degree—a misdemeanor. In exchange, the charge of child abuse in the second degree was Nolle Prosqui.

Presley was sentenced to two years in prison, with all but nine months suspended. He was also sentenced to three years of supervised probation, once released.

The abuse was reported to Maryland State Police (MSP) August 10, 2017 by the victim’s childcare provider. According to the charging documents, the responding officer noticed bruising on both sides of the boy’s face. The boy’s mother told investigators the bruises were caused by Presley and admitted to putting make-up on the boy’s face to hide the injuries.

During the investigation, the officer conducted an exam on the victim and noticed both new and old bruising on the victim’s body, including significant bruising around the boy’s face. has twice requested a statement from the prosecutor, Assistant State’s Attorney Julie White, but our calls have not yet been returned.
