First Missionary Baptist Church Takes Compassion to the Road Jan. 28

Lexington Park, MD – Known as ‘the little church with a big heart,’ members of First Missionary Baptist Church (FMBC) took time again to show warmth and compassion to those less fortunate in the community. That is exactly what a warm hat and a friendly smile from a familiar face can do. From noon to 2 p.m., Jan. 28, the Outreach Mission Ministry of FMBC hosted a warmth give-a-away event at the Exxon Gas Station on Great Mills Road and FDR Drive in Lexington Park.

“The Ministry started collecting scarfs, hats, gloves and others iteFMBCms before the new year,” said the Chair of the Outreach Mission Ministry. The church has hosted this on-the-street event for at least 10 years, members agreed.  “Every year we make announcements for donations, make flyers and notify other churches,” said a member.

With cooperation from the owners of the Exxon Gas Station and the assistance of the Lexington Park COPs Unit, ministry members put outreach into action and compassion in motion with each smile. When you are homeless, a hat or socks can often be hard to come by, and that is why this has been such as successful event each year for the Outreach Ministry of FMBC.

The Mission located on Great Mills Road participated by providing transportation to those homeless individuals in the community to the event. Individuals were welcome to walk up to the table and then helped to find whatever they needed. Ministry members distributed bag lunches, warm drinks, blankets, gloves, hats, scarves and socks to men, women, and children community in need.

FMBC s led by Pastor Rev. Roderick W. McClanahan. Rev. McCanahan believes, his Church is committed to equipping the Saints. “We believe in the Word of God and the Gospel of Jesus Christ. We accept the Old Testament and the New Testament as God's revelation to the world. Christ is our Savior who was crucified, buried, and rose from the grave. The Holy Spirit is present with us and helping us to live according to the Word of God,” said Rev. McClanahan.

FMBC has been actively involved in the Lexington Park community for years and is very in touch with the needs of its members. “We host the W.A.R.M. Program for a week each year for the homeless,” said Ellen Scott.  The W.A.R.M. (wrapping your arms around many) Program is where a local church hosts homeless guests overnight. Guests will arrive around 6 p.m. and have dinner and breakfast in the morning before leaving.

The next outreach event will be Praise in the Park, held in May at Chancellors Run Park off Chancellor’s Run Road in Great Mills.

First Missionary Baptist Church is located at 46370 Pegg Lane in Lexington Park.
