The Charles County Sheriff’s Office has determined the man wanted for a shooting which occurred June 15 has died in an apparent suicide. Derrick Thomas Pulliam, 20, of Brandywine, was found deceased on June 17 at 12:38 p.m. in a barn adjacent to the neighborhood where the shooting took place.

The investigation began on June 15 at 8:47 p.m. when Sheriff’s officers responded to the 11700 block of Hemingley Place in Newburg for the report of the shooting.

Detectives determined Pulliam and the victim, a 23-year-old Waldorf man, who are acquaintances, were attending a gathering when they began to argue. During the argument, Pulliam brandished a handgun and shot the victim. After the shooting, Pulliam fled the scene on foot. Officers searched the area but could not locate him.

A warrant was issued for his arrest, charging him with attempted second-degree murder, first- and second-degree assault, using a handgun in the commission of a violent crime and reckless endangerment.

Detectives responded after the owner of the barn, who was not connected to the June 15 incident, discovered Pulliam deceased. A preliminary death investigation indicates the suicide likely occurred shortly after the shooting.

The shooting victim was flown by a Maryland State Police helicopter to Prince George’s Hospital Center where he is expected to survive his injuries. Det. S. Fetterolf is investigating.
