National Music Acts Set to Invade St. Mary's County
CALIFORNIA - 5/23/2008

First came Rat on May 2, next up is Agent Orange; then one national act after another will treat St. Mary’s to quality rock, hip-hop, pop and more. Nope; not at the Calvert Marine Museum, Showplace Arena, or Regency Furniture Stadium, but right here in California, MD. What? That’s right! There’s a new concert venue in town and its right next door. Travel north on Route 4 towards Solomons and turn left at the very last place in St. Mary’s County before the Johnson Bridge – North Patuxent Beach Road. Drive on for two more minutes and run smack dab into Hulas. The concept and the edifice are nothing new. Both have been around for a very long time. Hulas is different. Why? Hulas the dance club, Hulas the concert venue, Hulas the entertainment Mecca sits quiet during the week, but on Friday through Sunday and on holidays like Memorial Day, the place jumps like nowhere else in Southern Maryland. According to owners, Bill Jarboe and wife Cindy, “Once a month we’re going to have a national act come in and perform.” When asked how it possible to get national music acts to come to Southern Maryland, Jarboe smiles. “I used to be with Cellar Door and built night clubs all over the United States. These acts are friends of mine,” said Jarboe. “But this club is not about me, it is here to give people in St. Mary’s an alternative to the same old entertainment opportunities,” he added. Jarboe is modest. In his career, he has worked with the likes of Ozzy Osborne, Lenny Kravitz, Greg Allman, Mos Def, JZ, Sublime and more. He has produced concerts at the Playboy mansion, Hollywood, Miami, and Washington, DC. He built National, the long standing 40,000 square foot nightclub in DC, which only this year gave way to become a parking lot for the new Nationals stadium. Hulas has a few amenities like a pool table and an outer deck looking over Town Creek with a view of the bridge. What the new concert venue and dance club has to offer is a lot of room to dance, a full bar, and someone that knows the business who can bring quality acts to Southern Maryland. Don’t believe it. Go check it out for yourself – it’s free! |
