Maryland State Police are investigating a fatal crash in Hughesville that has left a 32-year-old Lusby man dead.

Rescue crews responded to Northbound Route 5 near the Hughesville Bypass shortly before 8 p.m., on July 16. Upon arrival, crews discovered a single vehicle, a 1996 BMW 850R Motorcycle that had struck a guardrail. The driver of the motorcycle, John Paul Girolamo, 32 of Lusby, was transported by Trooper 7 to Prince George's Hospital, where he later died as a result of his injuries.

Investigation revealed the motorcycle was traveling north on Route 5 when the driver lost control of the bike, crossed the median strip, struck a guardrail and came to a rest in the roadway.

Traffic was backed up in the area for several hours while authorities were investigating.

No word if speed or alcohol were factors in this crash.
