UPDATE: Carjacking a Hoax: Man Arrested for Murdering His Wife

The 
husband who told Maryland State Police homicide investigators he and his wife were carjacked in New Jersey and the carjacker killed his wife along rural Kent County road early this morning has been charged with his wife’s murder.                

After consultation tonight with the Kent County state’s attorney, Maryland State Police homicide investigators charged Ryan D. Holness, 28 of the 48000-block of Spinnaker Court, Lexington Park,  with first-degree murder and second-degree murder.  He has been processed at the Centreville Barracks and will be taken before court commissioner in Kent County later tonight for bond hearing.

yan Holness is charged with the murder of his wife, Serika Dunkley Holness, 26 of the same address.  The body of Serika Holness was found by police lying in field along Rt. 290, four miles north of Rt. 301, in Crumpton, at about 6 a.m. June 5 
                    
Maryland 
State Police and the Kent County Sheriff’s Office responded to 911 call shortly before a.m. today in the 10000-block of Crumpton Road (Rt. 290).  Ryan Holness had gone to house there and asked the resident to contact 911.  He told police he and his wife were traveling back from visiting relatives in Brooklyn, New York last night when they were carjacked at rest area between exits 8A and on the New Jersey Turnpike.

Holness told investigators he was made to drive to the Crumpton area and was assaulted by the suspect who was armed with gun and knife.  He said the suspect bound his hands and feet with duct tape before attacking his wife who had attempted to flee.  

While 
Maryland State Police launched nationwide search for the suspect described by Ryan Holness and the vehicle today, they also interviewed numerous individuals and examined physical evidence at the scene.  Information provided by Holness throughout the day today did not match information developed through witnesses and evidence at the scene.  Further detail about those inconsistencies cannot be provided at this time.  

Troopers 
continue to search for the 2007 blue Honda Accord.  The car is believed to have Virginia registration plates reading either 876718, or KDZ-1408.  

This 
investigation and the search for the vehicle will continue throughout the weekend.  Anyone with information about this murder or the missing vehicle, is urged to contact Maryland State Police at the Centreville Barracks, at 410-758-1101. 


Maryland State Police have now determined that the man who reported that he and his wife were carjacked and that his wife had been killed by the assailant, has been arrested in that murder. Ryan Holness, 28, was charged with first- and second-degree murder in the death of Serika Dunkley Holness, 26.

MSP investigators reported that Holness’ statements were inconsistent with the facts discovered during the investigation. However, because of the in initial statements made by Holness, authorities launched a nationwide alert for the suspect’s 2007 blue Honda Accord.

At approximately 11 p.m. on Friday, June 5 the Honda was found in Washington, D.C. by a Metropolitan Police Officer. The car has been taken by MSP Investigators.
 


Maryland State Police responded to Kent County at approximately 6 a.m. on Friday, June 5 , to a reported carjacking and murder. According to news sources in the area, a man and woman from St. Mary's County in their 20s were on the way back to their St. Mary's County home when they were carjacked in a New Jersey Turnpike rest stop by a single male assailant.

The couple was forced to drive to Crumpton Road in Kent County where the suspect ordered the man and woman out of the car. The suspect then bound the man with duct tape. While doing so, the woman tried to escape. However, the woman was recaptured by the suspect and was killed.

Police are asking for any one with any knowledge of this incident to contact their local authorities as soon as possible. Police area also on the lookout for a 2007 blue Honda Accord with Virginia license tag either 876-718 or KDZ 2148. The names of the victims are being withheld pending notification of family.

The male suspect is described as only a male in a ski mask wearing a hooded jacket.

The male victim reported to authorities that it took him hours to escape his bindings. Police report that they found the woman's body stabbed to death on Crumpton Road.
