St. Mary's Motorcyclist Dies From Injuries

MECHANICSVILLE - 4/25/2009

On April 23, at approximately 3:52 p.m.. deputies from the St. Mary's County Sheriff's Office responded to a personal injury accident involving a motorcycle on Laurel Grove Road in the area of Kavanaugh Road, Mechanicsville. Upon arrival deputies located the operator, James Aloysius Butler, 36 of Eden,  lying on the ground with life threatening injuries. 

Due to Mr. Butler's condition he was flown by Trooper 7 to Prince George’s County Hospital Shock Trauma Center. Members of the Sheriff's Office Collision Reconstruction Team were requested and assumed the investigation
 
Investigation revealed Mr. Butler had been operating an unregistered 1996 Suzuki GSX600 Katana motorcycle, well in excess of the posted 30 mph speed limit, when he failed to negotiate a curve in the roadway. The motorcycle exited the south side of the roadway, struck two trees and became airborne. Mr. Butler was ejected and struck another tree.
 
At the time of the accident Mr. Butler was not wearing the required safety equipment. Several hours after the accident, Mr. Butler succumbed to his injuries at the P.G. County Hospital Shock Trauma Center. Speed and operator error are contributing factors in the crash.
 
The investigation is continuing by the St. Mary's County Sheriff's Office Reconstruction Team and anyone who may have information or witnessed the accident is asked to contact Corporal D. Mills @ (301)475-4200 Ext. 1984

Rescue Crews are responding to a motor vehicle accident involving a motorcycle along the 26300 block of Laurel Grove Road in the area of Cavanaugh Road in Mechanicsville.

The accident happened around 3:38 p.m. on April 23.

A 31-year-old male driving a Motorcycle was seriously injured. The patient is being flown by Trooper 7 to Prince Georges Shock Trauma. Preliminary reports indicate the victim's leg has been cut off.

TBN has a crew on the scene and will bring you more details as they become available.

If that was one of your friends or family members, I would think that you would have a problem with someone posting a comment like that. That goes to show that no matter what happens to people, you still have ignorant people who leave ignorant remarks, with no regard for peoples feelings...

The lord works in funny ways so if I were you, I'd be careful. Someone dying whether in a car or motorcycle is a loss and should be mourned. You are so judgemental. Jamie Butler was my cousin and now my aunt and uncle have to bury their first born child. My uncle's namesake.

To the ignorant person who made light of the death of my cousin God will deal with you. God forbid your family has to endure a tragedy of this level. It is quite obvious that you don't have the Lord in your life because if you did those words would never have escaped your mouth or fingers.

not really, because there was nothing UNTRUE about that statement. It is THAT TIME OF YEAR for many motorcycle accidents... with the MAJORITY of them being the driver's fault. Sport Bike riders speed way too often and drive like idiots.... and judging by this picture and the road that it was, it seems to me that SPEED may have been a factor here.... NOT A SHOCKER THERE! Maybe this will serve as a reminder to riders to slow it down and not to drive like an idiot... but then again, there will be plenty more of these stories.

And to the next ones that think driving on the shoulder past stopped vehicles at a stop light is the way to go, I warn... LOOK OUT FOR DRIVER'S SIDE DOORS SUDDENLY OPENING!!!

I know that you are always on here leaving your comments...negative ones most of the time...but did you see the article when the woman cut off a motorcyclist and killed him on Brooms Island Road...or how about the one when another vehicle pulled out in front of another motorcylist killing him and his wife...it not just us who ride motorcycles...but its also those in their cars who are not paying attention to the motorcycles...

Anyways... TO LEANNED80..... I didn't say EVERY accident is their fault... reread it. To those other accidents... those drives should have been more aware of their surroundings and be on the lookout for those MC's... however, a lot of the time they are speeing so fast and are smaller that its tough not to pull out in front of them.

and as for my comment, i said it APPEARS to be speed as being a factor... I didn't say, SPEED IS A FACTOR.... reread and quit looking to deep into things.

I'm sorry for the loss of Jamie. I have known him for a couple years now and he always had me laughing. He will be missed by so many. We had some good times and I will never forget them!!!

This was a terrible tragedy for the family, my fiance is Jamies cousin and the whole family was devastated by this..and there always has to be that one person who can't hold thier tongue and has to give thier 2 cents and be completely ignorant, even with such a tragic situation like this..it dosen't matter how it happened or what he did..the comments were uncalled for and as someone said, very childish, which is why he's trying to justify them..

My blessings and prayers are with all of Jamies many family members and friends, I know it's a rough blow, but stay strong..he will be missed.

My heart goes out to all friends and family. I grew up with Jaime, and was devastated by the unfortunate news, I dont live in the area any longer but I still keep in touch. If someone could please, hit me up with any information when it comes available of the arrangements. I dont live in the state so I would like to try to make it.

It is obvious that you are making your ignorant comments to upset those of us who knew Jamie personally, people wanting to express their condolences, or just people who have heart. I admit my cousin has lost his life due to poor judgment and the people who loved him dearly will mourn him forever. You have to be one heartless, demonic, loser to spend your time attempting to bring pain to people that are already grieving. What you probably haven't accepted is that you are miserable every day of your life. Yes, our hearts hurt now but yours must hurt every waking moment that God allows your ignorant butt to remain on this earth. I've read many of your posts and usually I don't get too offended. Some people like to just fling off at the mouth and their humor might be different from mine. But there is no need for your to beat your chest and holler that you were right. Obviously this man had a lot of people that cared about him and no matter what the circumstances surrounding his death, they are still hurting. That last comment was just unnecessary.

A very nice, well loved young man, father, son, friend, has been lost. He most likely made a bad decision while driving the bike, an accident is an accident. God bless him and his family.

You are a bald face liar. I know what happened and you do not. This "accident" was witnessed by many people, obviously you are NOT one of them. Mr. Butler was racing this bike, not his first or second time of it. Went TOO fast around a curve, laid the bike on himself, both he and the bike went airborne, both landing into trees in the air. I went to school with Jamie many years ago. I havent seen him in a long time. It doesnt make my heart hurt any less. He is one of the people who will always stand out in my memories of school. He had the greatest sense of humor and always went out of his way to help his friends. My prayers are with his family. Thanks for the memories Jamie, you will be missed.

I think I am still in shock! Jamie was one of those people that you couldn't help but like. His smile could light up a room. I knew him for more than 20 years. I will carry my memories with me forever. He made an impact on my life! I pray for his family and friends in this tragic time.
I think everyone needs to remember that a life was lost! At this point it doesn't matter if he was riding irresponsibly or riding with caution... a human being is no longer here.
A family/child/girlfriend/friends have lost someone that mattered very deeply to them.

We all have moments of weakness and I'm sure we all do the speed limit,use our turn signals, pay attention to pedestrians and don't run red lights. We all can point fingers and say our should of, could of, would of's... But it doesn't change the fact that in this moment a young man lost his life. On any given day it could have been any one of us (in the middle of one of our bad decessions)!

By no means do I condone things/decisions/choices he has made in his life. BUT on a personal level... He was a great guy and better than some people I know that don't have a criminal history. He was a guy that loved his family/friends but didn't always make the best choices. Just because he has a history does not mean he deserved to die. And illustrating his negative past at the time of his death is cruel and unnecessary. Good or bad... Right or wrong in his choices throughout his life... Doesn't diminish that fact that people loved/cared for him. JAMIE, not his choices is what people are missing!

Jamie was my first cousin and he will be greatly miss by all his family. I sat here and read these comments by truth_teller and I am trying to figure out what is going on in your mind. My cousin may not have been a saint, but he was a very special man to all of us. I pray to god that you will never have to go thru what our family is dealing with right now. I could be mean & nasty about your comments, but all we the family want is for the negative comments to stop. It is hard enough dealing with his death and then to come online to read your remarks, just makes things alittle more harder to deal with.

not saying he DESERVED to die by any means... just trying to get some answers, because after looking at that link that edinsomd posted, I don't see too many GOOD people doing those things. In fact, I would have much more harsher words than what I've posted for people that do those things, but I will hold them back for now. It just appears that the trend of all of his bad decisions has finally caught up to him including this last bad decision and I hope other people see this and make better decisions on MC's or live in general.

jamie was my cousin who i loved dearly you will never be able to take that from me ever however i read all the things you wrote on here however the only thing that stood out was that my cousin was driving a unregistered motorcycle yes that is true however, why is no one asking the right questions including the police whos bike was it? why was he on it? who gave him the keys? all these questions need to be asked however many people already know the answers yet nothing is being done to the person who is really at fault my cousin was on work release meaning he was only suppose to go to work and back to the jail.... thats it he was not suppose to be on that bike and i feel as though something should be done to the persons bike it belonged to real talk i love my cousin with all my heart rip jamie, but do know this after my cousin is laid to rest things will be settled with the chick that gave him the keys and we all know who that was linda short you are not a victim in this you are the cause of this you were only suppose to take him to the job and back to jail... you should be held on some type of charge since you were suppose to be responsible for him..... my cousin is gone now but never forgotten and justice will be served in some type of way rip cuz

It was someone elses fault that he was on the bike?? Someone elses fault that he wrecked?? Someone elses fault he died?? Someone should be prosecuted for HIS indiscretion??

Did they put a gun to his head?? Did they threaten a family members life?? I've read all the comments and "man" keeps coming up. He was a grown man...he made the decision...he was at fault.

I'm sorry for your loss, but placing blame somewhere else will not bring him back or lessen your sorrow.

truth needs to be told by a family member
and by the way everyone knew you was a round the way hoe of LP, ya dig you only kicked it with him for not even 2 months pretending it was somthing it wasnt my cousin just used you from the heart, now you acting like you need attention from this when its your fault you should have never gave my cousin the keys regardless!! but best believe you will be getting all the attention when everything is out in the open ya dig, and you just put your hands on him tuesday and now that i know that best believe you will be dealt with..BY GOD and god be with you to when you realize the bad choice you made by letting him do something that he wasnt even suppose to be doing... rip jay b

The answer to your question is No. The response to your comment is, actually I DO have sympathy for some people (it's evidenced in some other posts of mine elsewhere), just not for this guy. None at all.

re-read what I wrote! I DON'T HAVE ANY SYMPATHY FOR THIS GUY.... NONE WHAT-SO-EVER!!!! But I do have sympathy for other people when the situation calls for it. But this guy......... OH WELL!

WOW, you are a piece of work, I did not know this individual, but I do respect the people associated with him and making these comments with the harshness disrespects his family and friends. You must live a life of misery and make your life not feel so bad you justify your miserable existence by making these unsympathetic and hateful remarks. It's easy to talk this talk behind an alias name, but in public I bet you would never make such comments directly to individuals because you are a coward. May you find respect and peace with yourself.

well my boyfriend was close friends to jamie and i hope that the family is keeping there head high and staying strong in there time of loss, i feel for his brothers i am friends with them and i lost 3 brothers in two years to many differnt freak accidents and i know that its hard at first but in timne you heal and you bounce back. so just a little something to say that i am thinking of you and your family in you time of sorrow and disbelief and i wish you all well and im sorry for your loss. may god be with you to help you through.


p.s to the jacka** who leave dumb things on here get a life and have a heart. thing like this hurt and this is not time to judge only god may judge him now so who are you to post someone crimial background and say wheather or not they are good or bad people. some do what they have to do to make in this world weather it be a criminal or not its not your buisnness nor did you have to pay the conciquences for those actions. so get a life.

Truth Teller seems to be taking some heat from you idiots, allow me to help. I'm a biker, have been for forty years, so I'm pretty sure I know what happened. I bet Jamie got into big trouble by over cooking the turn. He entered the turn too fast and panic-braked, which stands the bike straight up, and he sailed off of the outside of the turn into the trees. A rookie mistake, and his last. Other interesting bits- the motorcycle is "unregistered", meaning illegal and Jamie, from what I've read here, was on work release. Was he riding the bike back to jail that Friday? I recalled his name, James Aloysius Butler, and did some research. Jamie's criminal record goes back some 17 years for the adult crimes he was caught and prosecuted for; I have no doubt there's a juvenile record as well, not to mention adult crimes he got away with. So we have:
   A career criminal
   On work release
   Riding an illegal motorcycle
   Who kills himself
Is that pretty much it? Sorry if I can't squeak out a tear for poor Jamie. I rather doubt his victims will either.

I would never say anything to belittle any human being's death. However, I don't see why everyone feels the need to ennoble this man in spite of his extensive criminal record. It seems contradictory that you can be a menace to society in life and still be viewed as a saint in death. Comments like "he may have committed assault, armed robbery, and numerous acts of theft, but he's still a good person" just bewilder me.

I wonder if some people defended Jeffrey Dahmer in a similar fashion? "He may have done all those terrible things, but now that he's dead, don't you dare talk bad about him! Show some respect! He was a really nice guy if you got to know him!"

And I'll bet the folks defending this guy are the same rednecks that leave the condescending "future inmates of America" comment every time there's a news post about some teenager getting caught with some pot. What hypocrites...

For the Negative Comments
To all of you leaving your negative comments... You can't help who you love. And I am sure you have no one in your life, that lives their life below your standards. A mother, a father, a sister and brothers can't help their love. I'm sure everyone who loved Jamie wished he had chosen a different path in life (a more "productive").
People who truly love someone else... don't give up on a person because they continue to make the wrong decisions. No one who knows Jamie is defending the things he has done. They/we are simply saying that he will be missed.
EVERYONE deserves peace in death! Who are we in his families time of true pain to sit here and judge him.
So he was far from being a saint! Let the Butler family have peace. Maybe it brightens their hearts a little (in this dark time)to hear people say "HE MATTERED TO ME!"
