Tiki Weekend DUI Roundup in St. Mary's County

ST. MARY'S COUNTY - 4/22/2009

In an ongoing effort to get drunk drivers off the roadways the St. Mary's County Sheriff's Office, in cooperation with the Maryland State Police, Leonardtown Barrack and the Calvert County Sheriff’s Office conducted a border to border driving while intoxicated saturation patrols from April 17 through April 19.

Driving While Intoxicated Saturation Patrols are set up to identify impaired drivers and are funded by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The results of the border to border patrol for the Maryland State Police, Leonardtown Barrack and the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office as follows:

Total Number of Vehicle Stopped     147
Total DUI Arrests                             15
Total Suspended Driver Citations        6
Total Speeding Citations                    6
Total Other Citations                          2

Total Criminal Arrests                        2
Total Warrant Arrests                        2

Where were the stops?
While I applaud the police officers that were out this weekend, 147 stops for the whole weekend seems a little low considering that there were 10,000 people on the island on Friday alone. And while there were only 15 people caught drinking and driving that's still over 10% of the total number of stops. If that's any indication of the percentage of people who did not make use of a DD or cab then I'm amazed that no one was killed.

mom of 3, your glass is obviously always half empty. maybe all the warnings put out by the police, and the media are working. maybe the steep fines and penalties for a DUI are taking effect. or perhaps your math is wrong. was there 10,000 people on the island? if so, do you know the percentage of those 10000 that are of legal drinking age? of those of legal drinking age, what percentage of them actually drank? Out of all the drinkers, what percentage became legally intoxicated? out of all the ones who got drunk, what percentage got behind a wheel? out of the ones who got behind a wheel, what percentage got stopped and arrested? I think 15 arrests is a good number for the tiki bar opening. Have a beer and cheer up. Life doesn't have to be so negative.

I agree the number of arrest seem low. The suspended drive citations is where i have a problem. These people should be arrested not given a citation. What's the point in suspending they're driving privileges?

I already told you what percentage got pulled over and arrested. 10.2% of the 147 that were stopped. And if the steep fines and penalties were taking effect then 1,000 people wouldn't have been arrested last year for DUI in Calvert alone. Many of them were not first time offenders.

They estimated 10,000 people on Friday. You have to be of age to go to the Tiki. Look at the picture do you see any kids there? No it's adults with drinks in there hands. I was making the point that 147 is not very many cars being stopped. That's no more then a normal DUI saturation checkpoint. I would have thought they would have stopped more people since more people were there.

And about me being negative. I'm not negative I'm a realist. People die every day because of drunk drivers. You want to see negativity, look in the mirror. I have never seen you say anything constructive. You only want to upset people, call them rednecks, say the usual go back to your trailer park or something nasty like that. I feel sorry for you. You must be a very unhappy person.

You said there were 10000 on the island. Go back and read it. Have you ever taken your "f" trophies to the island and not gone to the Tiki? if so, did they drink? duh! also, not sure what you meant about the yearly DUI arrests, but if I understand you correctly 1000 people were arrested in Calvert last year, thats almost 100 per month, which is 10% per month. Numbers look good to me. And yes I did look at the pics, lots of adults with drinks in their hands, and lots with out. Do you have some magic power that can tell which people are intoxicated by simply looking at a picture...wow! If you want, I can take you out and shove some drinks down that neck of yours and we can debate this in person. Just leave those little darlings of yours with their perspective fathers and we'll be off to the races baby!!

Not to mention...
MSP said that all 14 troopers on duty had a DUI arrest. But the entire SMC Sheriff's office had ONE arrest? Seems weak...

Please consider also, a DUI/DWI arrests takes time...meaning once you find and arrest the fool, then you must proceed with processing, testing (at the site and at the barrack/jail)...Imagine if MSP/SO had a local pull behind trailer to hold arrestees and process near their enforcement initiatives. You would definetley see more arrest. And most often driving while suspended or revoked often does result in arrests, but during this type of operation most likely lead to citation and "call someone to come pick your butt up".
Wasn't at the stops, but still think the officers did a great job. If only more people would have taken a cab or gotten a designated driver. Be safe, everyone...

thats cause everyone listened to the blue uniforms and they didnt listen to the brown uniforms, so the brown uniforms took those not listening to the clinker.

I was there
I am definitely of age but I did see some people that looked like they were barely of age. Not everyone that drank, drove. I walked...to my hotel. And there were a lot of other people walking to the hotels along the road. When I was leaving the island the next day I saw a LOT of cars still on the side of the road. Not ALL people that drink are irresponsible. Over all, i think that is a pretty low number but in a good way.

Designated Driver pulled over
I went to the opening. I didn't see check points. My designated driver was pulled over near the Wawa for some "traffic violation." I think they were staking out certain areas, pulling over people who made any little driving mistake and then seeing if they were intoxicated. It would be pretty time consuming to do that for over 100 cars. My dd was my mom driving a car full of drinkers. I found it pretty funny that she was pulled over. She was let go with a warning and thanked by the officer for being a DD.

I have been reading the post, and I just cant believe how Jersy_Boy (Jerky Boy) has been talking to you and everyone else. This is a post of what people think about the news that goes on in our county. Not a post of calling people names. I would just continue putting out some good reading for all the rest of us and not give that 41 year old virgin the satisfaction of saying anything back to him. Although I did give him a pice of my mind as well!

I Live near the Tiki and saw the cops working all evening. I think they did a great job. They kept the peace and let the people have their fun. They have to deal with a whole lot on day/nights like that. I am sure their were some people that got by. But the police cant be every where. They go out there and do the best thay can. I was very glad to hear that no one was hurt. I think the reason people dont get arrested for driving under a suspended Drivers is because some of the reasons they get suspened is for not paying a speeding or parking ticket. The jails would be over populated if they arrested everyone that did that. So they just fine them again. Then again it all depends what the cop feels like doing.

I am just glad there were no reports of any accidents.
