On March 20, at approximately 9:43 a.m., deputies responded to a residence on Quiet Lane in Leonardtown, to check the welfare of Nancy Martha Ahearn, 35 of Leonardtown. Deputy J. Labrack made contact with Ahearn and her eighteen-month-old child.

During the contact Deputy Labrack’s attention was temporarily diverted when the child pulled a book shelf over onto himself.  As Deputy Labrack was assisting the child, Ahearn went to a closet, retrieved a handgun and pointed it in the direction of Deputy Labrack.

As Deputy Labrack was retreating to a position of cover, Ahearn tracked his movement with the handgun.  While behind cover, Deputy Labrack observed Ahearn pull the trigger of the handgun which was still pointed in his direction.  The handgun failed to fire more then once.  Deputy Labrack was able to disarm and subdue Ahearn.

Ahearn was transported to St. Mary’s Hospital for an evaluation.  On March 25, Nancy Ahearn was charged with attempted murder and first-degree assault.
