Is It Time to Abolish Black History Month?

February is Black History Month and it may surprise many that there is a growing resentment against the designated celebration of African American culture, history and accomplishments; not from whites but from African Americans.

Many African Americans have grown tired being visible only during February, and then as soon as the calendar page turns, yet again, becoming the invisible people. Almost thirty years after the creating of the celebratory month, the backlash against the designated month has begun.

To be sure, the month is and can be a stimulating time for many high-profile Black Americans, whose lives and accomplishments are celebrated. However many others view the momentary recognition exhaustive and depressive.

Considering the history and extraordinary contributions by those of color, many wonder why these accomplishments are treated as “side attractions,” only acknowledged or recognized during February. There are those that feel the accomplishments should part of the everyday historical fabric of America throughout the year.

In short, there are many that feel being American refers primarily to those of the white race. No matter how one chooses to see the past, the foundation of America was built from the toil and efforts of all peoples; all colors, creeds and philosophies.

Given the historical 2008 presidential election and the populous vote that carried into office America’s first African American president, the fabric of today’s multifaceted American society should perhaps no longer be compartmentalized by that of skin color.
