Winter Storm Wrap-Up: St. Mary's County

With yesterday’s sudden snow accumulation and road deterioration that caught many off guard, TBN decided to put up a Winter Storm Wrap-Up for each county. What follows is a wrap-up of the multiple incidents in St. Mary’s County. The pictures included herein are courtesy of Mechanicsville Volunteer Fire Department. In one brief flurry of activity in St. Mary’s County from 7 a.m. to about 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 27, there were: 48 Property Damage Accidents (Fender Benders), 5 Personal Injury Accidents, 14 Disabled Vehicles, two of which where reclassified from property damage accidents, and two school bus accidents. One was for a bus turned over on its side that had the driver transported to St. Mary’s Hospital. In that case, there were no kids on board. That one took place at Maddox Road and Hurry Road. In addition to the school bus accident at Laurel Grove already reported by TBN, there was one additional incident involving a school bus. In that case, the bus ran off the roadway (left tire in the ditch) on Army Navy Drive. There were children on board but no one was injured. That incident was reclassified to disabled vehicle.

I WAS TOTALLY AMAZED AT THE NUMBER OF IDIOTS WHO MANAGED TO MASH UP THEIR OWN AS WELL AS OTHER PEOPLE'S VEHICLES. I DROVE TO WORK IN THE SNOW AND HOME IN THE ICE AND NEVER HAD ONE PROBLEM. THE PROBLEM WASN'T THE WEATHER BUT THE INDIVIDUALS.

FireMaggie 1/28/2009 at 1:06 PM I vote to rename them... bumper busses instead of school busses. jebus, the worst bus drivers ever. I grew up in AA county, and a school bus accident was unheard of. here it is a monthly occurance. Reply to This Comment

freefaller 1/28/2009 at 2:43 PM Reply to FireMaggie: with all due respect when you and I grew up, there was no Internet so we didn't hear about every traffic accident in the county where we lived. The information age gives us alot more information than we ever had before!

I'm sure you were driving your Toyota Prius on a nice flat road and you weren't required to drive on hazardous hilly snow covered roadways in a school bus. Yes, common sense would make people second guess on driving on these type of roads in these conditions. The bus drivers don't have that luxury. An accident isn't avoidable when a bus slides sideway down a snow covered hill. I would agree that most accidents were clearly caused by driving to fast. From Bus Drivers Husband. MichelleH1 1/28/2009 at 8:55 PM Our Terrible School Board I think it's really funny how you "Dirty Redd" & "Fire Maggie" can be so judgemental on these St. Mary's County Bus Drivers. Aren't you from Calvert County "Dirty Redd"? So, how would you know what the road conditions were in St. Mary's County? Just to let you know they were horrible buses should not have been on the road! My experiences with the drives have been Wonderful. Either way it was a bad judgement call from the school board. If that was your child on that bus would you still have the same opinion? I'm really glad you made it to work and home safely in the 3 inches of snow & ice. P.S. Hopefully next time you will have to drive through 10 inches of snow ice covered! O' and one more thing sorry your free babysitter was closed today! Reply to This Comment

davidson 1/29/2009 at 6:05 AM Reply to MichelleH1: disagree I disagree with you 100%. The bus drivers in st. marys need training or better training. You dont see these accidents in states that get alot more snow and ice than we do. It is the resposiblity of any driver too maintain control of theyre vehicle. If you cant do that then dont drive. Even without the snow its crash after crash. The definition of brakes in st. marys is when you hit something.
