Congratulations to Citizen Police Academy Graduates
ST. MARY'S COUNTY - 11/19/2008
|
Sheriff Timothy Cameron would like to congratulate the participants of the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office Citizen Academy for successfully completing the program on Nov. 13. The Citizen’s Police Academy was implemented to educate the public about the criminal justice system. The main goal of the academy is to provide the community with a look into the day-to-day operations of law enforcement and, specifically, the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office. Sheriff’s Office personnel conducted the presentations and provided attendees with exciting facts concerning the various units within the agency, which include: K-9, emergency services, forensics/crime lab, accreditation, uniform patrol, administration, Bureau of Criminal Investigations, communications/911, State’s Attorney’s Office, parole and probation, community policing and corrections. Academy participants gained a better understanding of law enforcement procedures which are more reflective of everyday police work as opposed to what is stereotypically portrayed by the media. Participants also gleaned knowledge concerning what roles they may play in protecting and how to better serve their respective communities. The Citizens Police Academy is free and open to anyone over the age of 18. Applications to attend the academy are continuously accepted for all future sessions. Interested persons may log on to the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office Web site, www.firstsheriff.com, click on the miscellaneous section, go to Citizen’s Police Academy, and complete an application form. Completed forms may be delivered directly to the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office or dropped in the mail. The application will be processed and candidates will be contacted prior to the commencement of the next available class. The classes are held at the Sheriff’s Office headquarters located at 23150 Leonard Hall Drive in Leonardtown, with field trips to the Southern Maryland Criminal Justice Academy and the St. Mary’s County Detention Center. The 7-week course is held on Thursday evenings, in three hour sessions. The next Citizen’s Police Academy will be scheduled for the spring of 2009. For further information please contact Ms. Kelly Castle at (301) 475-4200 ext. 1910. |
