Just before 9 a.m. on Friday, units with the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office and Maryland State Police arrived at a residence in Chaptico. Police set up a perimeter around the house for reports of a man threatening to take his own life.

The man, as yet unidentified, was reported to have threatened to shoot his wife Thursday, and demanded to speak with her during the police standoff.

The suspect would not confirm or deny if he had any weapons inside the house.

He threatened units outside the house, saying if they tried to enter “something will happen.”

Deputies began to set up a command center at Our Lady of the Wayside Catholic Church in Chaptico as the negotiator traveled to the scene.

Just before 9:30 a.m., police saw movement within the house. Phone contact was made with the suspect. Moments later, the man exited the house and walked down the driveway, surrendering himself to the authorities. He was taken into custody at approximately 9:33 a.m., ending the standoff.

No word if any weapons have been found inside.
